Thanksgiving Thoughts

You never really know how much your life counts in the lives of others and how much others count in yours until stories are told.

I am thankful for my children. Time flies.

I am thankful for Ruth. I am so glad she agreed to lead music at camp Chaparral in the summer of '88.

I have some good friends.

The Macy's Day parade was sweet. NYC was so much fun. I am glad we came across the band in the subway. Their CD is great. Fred's was just the right atmosphere.

The weekend was difficult for some people and we all need to remember that while counting our blessings we are to pray for those who are saddened and seek to encourage them.

I need to be more giving.

I need to slow down in some areas of life and up the tempo in others.

I am glad my son is able to work at the Christmas Tree Lot. He enjoys it and it is helping him learn about work and finances.

My daughter is smart and is doing well at GMU.

We have two nice looking Christmas Trees that are ready to be decorated.

I am thankful our neighbors allowed us to use her dryer. Look forward to repairing ours.

An Old Cowboy

One Sunday morning, an old cowboy entered a church just before services were to begin. Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean, he wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were worn and ragged. In his hand he carried a worn-out old hat and an equally worn, dog-eared Bible.

The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city. It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen. The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and fine jewelry. As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed him. They were all appalled by his appearance and did not attempt to hide it.

As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor. "Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship in church." The old cowboy assured the preacher he would.

The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same ragged jeans, shirt, boots, and hat. Once again he was completely shunned and ignored. The preacher approached the cowboy and said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church."

"I did," replied the old cowboy.

"And what was his reply?" asked the preacher.

"Well, sir, God told me that he didn't have a clue what I should wear. He said he'd never been in this church."

Experiencing trials and suffering can help us grow and minister to others. For example, in 2 Corinthians 1:1-11 we read three good things that God can bring out of suffering. First, is that we can learn to comfort others.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God (vv. 3-4).
Anyone who has gone through a heartbreak, a time of loneli¬ness, or a period of great pain and had been comforted by God is able to comfort those who go through a similar trial. There is a mutual understanding and a real compassion that allows one to better help and minister to someone during a dark and hard time in their life.
A second thing we learn is not to trust in ourselves but in God who can see us through our difficulties. In verses II Corinthians 1: 8-9 we read that the apostle Paul was "burdened beyond measure, above strength, ... that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead."
It seems that we are often inclined to try to go through life in our strength as long as we can, and often never learn the lesson of dependency on God until we are forced to-until we are taken beyond our ability to cope and learn that we need God's strength. In the midst of trials we learn that we can depend on God as we lean on him and go through the difficult times with His presence and strength.
Third, we can learn to give thanks in all things because of God's mercy and grace. In verse 11 Paul writes, "you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many." The apostle Paul thanked the Corinthian believers for praying for him when he was in such difficulty. In our trials and pain, we learn that we need God and we need others, and can be thankful when we experience how important they all are to our lives.

Financial Ministry Team Meeting

The HCC Financial Ministry Team and the Ministry Leadership Team members met together this morning for 3.5 hours so that we could look ahead, plan ahead and discuss what we want to see happen in people's lives as we seek to be good stewards of the financial gifts given to God via HCC. The individuals on these two teams are good thinkers, wise planners and seek to honor God as we see HCC lead people to become totally committed followers of Jesus Christ. We are off to a good start and look forward to completing the Financial Ministry Operation Plan for 2011 and mailing it to all HCC members and regular attenders for their prayers, input and approval as we move forward and seek to make disciples.

Help One Another

A friend of mine took the picture below. He and I, and four others took a little hike to a summit and as we were hiking up we were assigned a rock to carry. The rock represented a burden. A personal burden, a family burden, and a ministry/work related burden. We walked in silence as we offered the burdens to God. Each of us had to carry every one's rock for part of the trek up the mountain. Upon reaching the top and looking out over a beautiful bluff we built the little altar to God, took the Lord's Supper and were encouraged to offer our concerns to God and help one another. I want to encourage you to offer your concerns to God and give and receive help. Do not go it alone. Take a moment. Give the worries on your mind and heart to God. Call someone this eve and give them an encouraging word. Be ready to receive help and give help.

Put Your Heart Into It

..with all their heart. That is how we should approach our day and our work. It is no easy task, yet it can be done. Put your heart into it. We do not like people to do something for us at work in a half mannered way and we should not do things at work in a half mannered way. Put thought, effort, sweat, and heart into your work.

Spy Rock - Was There On Monday

Spy Rock is a beautiful place in VA. The video above is from Nov. 2008 when I was there with a friend who introduced me to Spy Rock. I was there just this past Monday with some fellow pastors and we had a good time hiking and climbing in the rain. We hiked up a mountain at camp Crossroads on Tuesday and took the Lord's Supper while sitting on top of a bluff. It was awesome. I thank God for opportunities like I had on Monday and Tuesday. I thank God for peers who are good listeners, affirming, and who desire to see people follow Jesus Christ.

Beach Baptism Bash - Oh Yeah!

Horizon Community Church baptized 6 people at the beach yesterday. The Student Ministry took many adults and students to the beach following the 10:00 AM service and myself and many others joined them later in the day for a Baptism Bash at the beach. What a wonderful time. Prior to the baptism those being baptized, their parents, grandparents and some friends gathered around for introductions, celebration, encouragement and an example of how the baptism would happen when we stepped into the ocean. Waves coming and people being plunged. Good times. Parents baptizing their children, people celebrating, photos being taken and videos being made. It was a Holy partying time. God spoke. People all around us, even the surfers, paused, observed and listened. Those involved with Horizon encouraged each other, met knew people and worshipped God on the beach. May HCC continue to share the hope found in God through Jesus Christ with those all around us and world wide.

Back From The Texas Trip

The Nethery's are back from our venture to TX. We had a really good time visiting with High School friends and their families, seeing and hanging out with relatives, driving almost 4000 miles, and staying the night in 10 different places. We lived out of the back of the van for most of the trip and became very good at loading and unloading the van. During our time to and from TX we had many naps, laughs, meals and discussions in the Toyo. While in the great state we had many naps, laughs, meals and discussions. Gracious friends and family allowed us to step into their lives and enjoy their homes and company. What a blessing. What a priveledge it was to visit with people who are loving, solid, caring individuals.
